New Year, New You

It’s January 4th, how are you doing with those New Year’s resolutions? Why do people feel like they have to do everything all at once? You have 365 days in a year, take your time, focus your energy on one thing at a time. People get so overwhelmed that they end up falling off the wagon. This is why you can’t find a parking spot at the gym in January, but by March, there are tumbleweeds blowing by all the empty treadmills. 

Relax, slow down, and PRIORITIZE! What is your most pressing goal of the new year? If it’s losing weight, than start focusing on that first. Get into a regular workout routine, pay attention to what you’re eating. Once you have that down, look at your next most pressing goal. Want to save money? Sit down with your budget, start tracking your spending. And then? Move on to your next goal, and your next goal, and your next goal.

And take some time to plan. Remember, a goal without a plan is just a wish. Most people spend more time planning a day off from work than they do planning their lives. Take some time to examine your goals and then put together an action plan to help you achieve them. It’s not enough to say what you want, you have to know how you’re going to get it!

Don’t know much about exercise and nutrition? Do some research, buy some books. Get a health coach…I know a great one by the way…HINT HINT!

Don’t know much about budgeting? Same deal. Anything you want to learn can be learned if you focus some energy on it.

And don’t wait for things to be perfect; they never will be! Start where you are, with what you have, and what you know. Then expand and keep moving forward.

I spent New Year’s Eve with my family. Not my biological family, but the family I choose and that accepted me in. Normally, when midnight arrives I say, “I hope it’s going to be a good year.” This year, when the ball dropped, my whole outlook on the year changed with the swap of one little four-letter word. Instead of saying, “I hope it will be a good year,” I said, “It WILL be a good year!” And because I said it, it will be so!

You Are Not a Tree

It’s almost the new year, and I know many of you are starting to put together your new year’s resolutions. Or as I call them, “the list of things that you say you are going to do, but never do!”

Change is scary, I know, I’ve made a lot of changes in my life over the years. Some were good, some, not so good. Some where vitally necessary to my well-being, others, I probably could have done without. But the bottom line is, change is inevitable. It’s going to happen whether you initiate it or not, and whether you’re on board or not.

Here’s the thing. If there is something in your life that you don’t like, CHANGE IT! For the love of God, YOU ARE NOT A TREE! You do not have to stay somewhere that you don’t want to be!

Hate your job? Get another one! Can’t get another one? At least work to make the one you have as good as it can be. And be grateful that you have a job; many are not that lucky!

In a bad relationship? Get out! Stop making excuses. Try fixing the relationship. Can’t fix it? Maybe it’s time to move on. Don’t be miserable and make your partner miserable. Everyone deserves to be happy…THAT INCLUDES YOU!

Your kids suck? Well, you can’t give them back, there is no SPCA for children. But why not sit and think about what the issues are. Talk to your kids. And take responsibility for your role in the issues. Turn off the TV, turn off the XBox, and have a meaningful conversation with your children.

Things don’t get better by chance, they get better by change!

Don’t like where you live? Move! YOU ARE NOT A TREE! Stop whining and complaining and DO SOMETHING!

People stay rooted to things that don’t work for them for lots of reasons. Sometimes it’s fear that keeps us stuck, sometimes, it’s pure laziness. And yes, I know that circumstances sometimes keep us from moving forward. “I’d love to quit my job, but I can’t afford to.” Yeah, I get that! And if that’s the case, then stay where you are, but stop bitching about it! Either make the decision to stay there and make it work, or make the decision to start looking for something more suitable.

So what are you going to do with all those new year’s resolutions? Are you going to have the same ones this year as you did last year? And the same ones next year as you had this year? Or are you finally going to say, “This is MY time! This time I am going to commit to the hard work it’s going to take to make significant changes in my life! This time, I am going to put myself first and make my life work for me!”

Become a change agent in your own life. Stop living by default and start living by design and please, remember this, YOU ARE NOT A TREE!

Write that down! Put a post it note on your dashboard, hang it on your bathroom mirror, write it on a slip of paper and put it in your wallet, but please remember it! If you are not happy where you are, with who you are with, and with what you have, make a change!
